“Inside Out 2” continues to make waves at the box office, achieving two remarkable milestones: it has surpassed “The Avengers” in all-time worldwide grosses and secured a spot in the top ten highest-grossing movies of all time.
This week, “Inside Out 2” hit $1.523 billion in global ticket sales, edging out “The Avengers” at $1.520 billion and pushing Marvel’s first mega-crossover down to #11. This achievement makes “Inside Out 2” the highest-grossing Pixar film and the second-biggest Disney movie, following the “live-action” remake of “The Lion King.”
The list of films “Inside Out 2” has outgrossed includes “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Barbie,” “Black Panther,” “Frozen II,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and all movies in the “Fast & Furious” and “Harry Potter” franchises.
Here is the updated all-time worldwide top ten box office list:
- Avatar – $2.92 billion
- Avengers: Endgame – $2.79 billion
- Avatar: The Way of Water – $2.3 billion
- Titanic – $2.26 billion
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $2.07 billion
- Avengers: Infinity War – $2.05 billion
- Spider-Man: No Way Home – $1.92 billion
- Jurassic World – $1.67 billion
- The Lion King – $1.66 billion
- Inside Out 2 – $1.52 billion
While “The Avengers” has been knocked off the top ten, Marvel still holds three of the top ten spots and six in the top 25. Pixar, on the other hand, boasts two entries, with “Incredibles 2” joining “Inside Out 2.”
The tremendous success of “Inside Out 2” comes at a crucial time for Pixar, following a challenging period during the pandemic when Disney opted for direct-to-streaming releases. “Lightyear,” their first theatrical release post-pandemic, was a commercial letdown, but they bounced back with “Elemental,” which, despite mixed reviews, grossed nearly $500 million thanks to positive word-of-mouth.
Looking ahead, Pixar aims to sustain this momentum with the release of “Elio” in 2025 and a new “Toy Story” sequel in 2026.
