Apple’s upcoming crime film “Wolfs,” starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, has taken a new direction. Initially slated for a wide theatrical release on September 20 after its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, it will now have a limited one-week run in theaters before landing on Apple TV+ on September 27.
Despite this shift, Apple has already greenlit a sequel for “Wolfs,” with Jon Watts returning as writer and director. The film features Clooney as a professional fixer and Pitt as a second fixer. Forced to work together, their night spirals out of control, creating a mix of action, comedy, and drama. The cast also includes Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, Poorna Jagannathan, Richard Kind, and Zlatko Burić.
Apple’s decision to pivot its release strategy comes in the wake of the underwhelming performance of “Fly Me to the Moon,” a $100 million film that earned only $39 million globally. Despite this, Apple remains committed to producing high-quality content and sees “Wolfs” as a major event film that exemplifies its approach to blending theatrical and streaming releases.
Head of Apple Original Films, Matt Dentler, emphasized the unique chemistry between Clooney and Pitt under Watts’ direction, promising an entertaining experience for audiences both in theaters and on Apple TV+. As Apple navigates its future film strategy, “Wolfs” stands out as a key project, with high expectations for its reception and the potential for its sequel.
