Mob Psycho 100 is a Japanese web manga series written and illustrated by One. Serialized by Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday website, compiled in 16 chapters, was made available on it’s mobile app MangaONE. The anime television production first aired in July 2016 by Bones and had a total of 3 seasons that continued until 2022. In 2018, the Shogakukan MangaONE app serialised a spin-off manga series called Reigen.
The story follows a high school boy, Shigeo Kageyama (Mob), who has psychic abilities and is unsure of how to handle them when he is treated like an outcast by society. An incident in childhood makes him conservative and wary of his emotions, bottling up his feelings and having a constant internal battle. Seeking aid through consultation, he meets Reigen, who lifts his spirits and gives him a clear sight that he is no different than a commoner and should never feel alienated among humans nor prideful of his supernatural abilities.
From then on, Reigen becomes his Master, and Mob works under him as an evil spirit esper. As the story advances, several psychics are introduced, initiating a whirlwind of battles between supernatural beings.
Mob, being the most powerful among them, refuses to use his powers on other humans or to their full extent due to his kind soul. However, his bottled-up emotions since childhood pose a constant threat of spilling and unleashing the monstrous power within.
Throughout the series, Mob’s kind and humble soul provides a moral lesson that the lust for power and control over others will only make one lonely and hated by everyone in the end. True friends and emotions are what bond humans and make life worth living.
The manga alone has over 2.8 million copies in circulation and has won the Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category. The anime series is a popular adaptation and is considered one of the best.
